At its “DevDay” gathering this week, Open AI made several big announcements, introducing “GPT Builder” that enables subscribers to create their own customized versions of ChatGPT, and “GPT-4 Turbo,” which enhances ChatGPT performance and enables uploads as large as a book.

These updates, building on the recent introduction of voice and vision capabilities to ChatGPT, transforms ChatGPT into a powerful multimodal assistant with far-reaching applications in the classroom.

Here are some scenarios in educational settings:

Customized Course Version of ChatGPT

The updated GPT-4 facilitates the creation of custom chatbots for digital learning environments. This adaptability allows teachers to tailor chatbots to specific curricular needs. A science teacher, for example, could program the chatbot to understand and align with the specific syllabus and learning outcomes of their science course. The teacher could program the chatbot to administer quizzes on specific syllabus topics, providing immediate feedback and explanations for each answer.
