AI Tools for Personalized Learning

  1. Khanmigo

Khanmigo is an intelligent tutoring system designed to provide students with one-on-one tutoring developed by Khan Academy, a nonprofit educational organization, . Khanmigo leverages AI techniques, such as natural language understanding, speech recognition, and computer vision to interact with students through voice or text, understand their questions and needs, provide them with relevant content and exercises, and give them feedback and encouragement. Khanmigo can also help teachers by providing them with AI-guided lesson planning and insightful student feedback.

  • Pricing: $9/month or $99/year per user. To equip an entire school, or district contact Khan Academy

  • URL: https://www.khanacademy.org/khan-labs

Tom’s Take:

Khanmigo is a significant advancement in commercially available intelligent tutoring systems for K-12 schools. Its most important feature is that it can takes students through the sequential steps or thought process needed to solve a problem, instead of simply providing students with the answer. As such, students are encouraging to engage with the chatbot and reflect on their thinking. Another benefit is that can act as a teaching assistant for students who can work on their own, especially when a teacher might need to devote time to help a struggling student. But, as one district notes, Khanmigo can help “too much, too fast” and can make mistakes. But as Khanmigo improves, it may turn out to be an invaluable “co teacher” in classrooms.

2. ChatGPT

ChatGPT by OpenAI is an AI chatbot that can provide personalized instruction tailored to student’s individualized learning needs. ChatGPT can create an individualized learning environment that promotes both engagement and understanding. Furthermore, ChatGPT is an extremely versatile learning assistant that can generate any number of personalized learning scenarios.

ChatGPT can provide support in a wide range of K-12 subjects and curriculum materials, provide immediate feedback on student work and engaging in a prolonged conversation with the student as needed. For example, ChatGPT can create an interactive lesson that teaches a concept using real-world examples. It can create a step-by-step guide, explaining a process and also can generate practice problems so that students can apply their knowledge and receive feedback. A conversation with ChatGPT can also encourage the student to think critically about a topic and it can present various methods for solving problems. In addition, ChatGPT can suggest effective study techniques based on the student’s learning style.

Additionally, ChatGPT can suggest a personalized study plan, explain various note-taking methods, create a study schedule, offer strategies for effective time management,

Pricing: ChatGPT-4 is $20/month, but ChatGPT version 3.5 is free.

Tom’s Take:

ChatGPT is an extremely flexible and robust personal learning assistant. It can personalize learning for students in many different ways, from suggesting personalized study plans to creating study guides, practice, and discussion

ChatGPT 3.5 is also free, so its easily accessible by students and teachers can assist teachers in a wide range of writing tasks. But version 3.5 does not contain information after September 2021, so curriculum content might be limited. And ChatGPT does make errors at times.

But the biggest challenge is constructing effective prompts in order to elicit the desired personalized learning. Effective prompts can take time and practice to construct and often need refinement. So, in the case of unsupervised students, they may not want to spend time creating an effective prompt to help them learn and may simply ask for the “correct” answer. Unlike Khanmigo, there is no mechanism to prevent ChatGPT from simply feeding students answers.

3. Tutor AI

Tutor AI is a web-based platform that can help students learn math, science, and English by using AI to provide them with interactive lessons, exercises, quizzes, and games. TutorAI can adapt to the students’ learning styles, preferences, and goals, and provide them with instant feedback and explanations. TutorAI can also help teachers by providing them with data, insights, and recommendations on their students’ progress and performance.

Price: 9.99/month

Tom’s Take:

Tutor AI is adept and useful at adjusting personalized learning to student needs. And its especially helpful for “core” K-12 subject areas, like Math, science and English. But it lacks ChatGPT’s wide range of personalization and Khanmigo’s techniques to guide students through the learning process.

AI Tools for Teachers

My goal is to help teachers find AI tools to assist them with their various teaching responsibilities.

As I review AI tools I have three main criteria in mind:

  1. A robust range of features to help teachers.

  2. An intuitive interface to help teachers

  3. An affordable price for teachers (and schools).

My rating of each criteria is color coded as follows:

  • GREEN= Very Good

  • YELLOW= Fair

  • RED = Poor

I do not accept money for reviews.

Tools worth mentioning

Sizzle

Sizzle is an AI-powered learning app developed by Jerome Pesenti, former VP of AI at Meta. Sizzle offers a personalized approach to solving math equations and word problems that involves students through each step of the problem, acting as a tutor chatbot. Sizzle also extends its problem-solving capabilities to subjects like physics, chemistry, biology, and economics, catering to all learning levels.

Sizzle guides the user through the correct steps of solving a problem. The "Try a Different Approach" feature allows users to suggest alternative problem-solving methods. The "Give Me Choices" option presents multiple answers, while the "Answer with a Photo" feature enables image uploads. If you get stuck you can asl Sizzle for a definition. Bad handwriting? Sizzle can decipher it.

I took a picture of an Algebra word problem and Sizzle correctly deciphered it and walked me through the steps to its completion. In each step it offered to “Give Me Choices” or “Try a Different Approach.” When I selected Give Me Choices I was given four options. When I subsequently made an error I was provided with a brief explanation and another four choices. When I selected Try a Different Approach I was prompted to explain how I would like Sizzle to re-approach the problem. I wasn’t sure what to say, so reverted to Give Me Choices. I was impressed with the guidance I received. But when I got frustrated with myself I was tempted to chose Reveal the Step to just give me the answer!

Sizzle has an average rating of 4.6 stars on both the App Store and Google Play store.
